as posted by the channelThe 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" was one of the most infamous Waffen-SS divisions of World War II. Formed in 1939, it saw action in numerous major campaigns, including the invasions of France and the Soviet Union. On the Eastern Front, "Das Reich" participated in battles such as Kharkov and Kursk, earning a reputation for both combat effectiveness and brutal conduct.
In 1944, after refitting in France, the division became infamous for the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, where it slaughtered over 600 civilians in retaliation against the French Resistance. Later that year, it fought in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge before retreating into Germany.
"Das Reich" was heavily involved in some of the war’s most intense battles but was also responsible for war crimes. After the war, several of its members were prosecuted for war crimes.
