The Netherlands remained neutral during World War I (1914–1918), avoiding direct involvement in the conflict. However, the war had significant economic, social, and political impacts on the country. The Dutch government, under Queen Wilhelmina, maintained strict neutrality, balancing relations with both the Allies and the Central Powers.
Despite neutrality, the Netherlands faced food shortages due to British naval blockades and German submarine warfare, leading to rationing and social unrest. Over one million Belgian refugees fled to the Netherlands to escape the German invasion, straining resources. Dutch trade suffered, though the country profited from smuggling.
The military was mobilized to guard borders, and tensions arose over espionage and internment of soldiers from warring nations. Post-war, the Netherlands provided asylum to Germany’s exiled Kaiser Wilhelm II, which angered the Allies. Though spared from direct combat, WWI shaped Dutch politics, economy, and society for years to come.
