The Allies—France and Britain—had a slim chance of winning the Battle of France in 1940, but several key factors worked against them. The Germans employed a new tactic, Blitzkrieg, which overwhelmed the static French defenses, such as the Maginot Line. The Allies were slow to adapt, and their outdated military strategies left them vulnerable to fast-moving armored divisions.

The Germans also exploited weak points in the Ardennes, an area the French considered too difficult for a large-scale attack. Combined with poor communication, coordination issues, and a lack of air superiority, the Allies found it difficult to respond effectively.

If the Allies had been quicker in reinforcing vulnerable areas and adapting to mobile warfare, there might have been a chance to slow the German advance. However, the speed, efficiency, and surprise of the German attack meant that the odds were heavily stacked against them from the start.
