This state encompassed the area around Bogotá and aimed to establish a centralized government independent from Spain, but faced internal conflicts with other provinces and ultimately fell under Spanish reconquest.
Following Spain's dissolution of its Supreme Central Junta in 1810, various provinces in New Granada (modern-day Colombia) began declaring independence from Spanish rule.
The Free and Independent State of Cundinamarca emerged from this period, with Bogotá as its capital and led initially by Jorge Tadeo Lozano and later by Antonio Nariño.
Cundinamarca's leaders favored a centralized government structure, believing it would allow the region to dominate and unify the rest of New Granada. This centralist stance clashed with the United Provinces of New Granada, which advocated for a federalist system of government.
The ideological differences led to a civil war between Cundinamarca and the United Provinces, hindering the overall independence movement.
In 1814, forces under Simón Bolívar of the United Provinces defeated Cundinamarca, and by mid-1815, the region was under Spanish reconquest, ending its brief period of independence.
