Take a look at this uniform and now look at these uniforms. Nazi-era uniforms and East German (GDR) military uniforms looked strikingly similar because both drew from the same pre-1945 German military traditions. The Nazis had adopted and refined elements of the old Imperial German and Weimar Reichswehr styles—tunic cuts, peaked caps, and field-grey colors—adding their own distinctive insignia. After 1945, Germany was divided, but mostly East retained much of this visual heritage.

In the GDR, the newly formed Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) in the 1950s needed a uniform design that was practical, familiar, and quickly accepted by recruits, many of whom had served in the Wehrmacht during WWII. Rather than inventing a completely new style, East German designers kept the traditional cut, color, and rank layout, while removing WW2 symbols like the swastika and replacing them with socialist emblems.

This choice was partly ideological: the GDR claimed to be the true heir of Germany’s “anti-fascist” tradition, not a break from its military professionalism. The visual continuity also had a propaganda function—it signaled to citizens and the West that East Germany was still a capable, disciplined military power. As a result, to modern eyes, NVA uniforms often appear almost indistinguishable from their Third Reich-era predecessors, except for the insignia.
