as posted by the channelAt the heart of the conflict was ideology. The Bolsheviks, who led the Russian Revolution in 1917, believed in international class struggle. They saw nationalism — including Jewish nationalism — as a tool of the bourgeoisie to divide the working class.
Zionists, on the other hand, argued that Jews needed a homeland of their own, especially in the face of antisemitism. They promoted Hebrew culture, Jewish self-determination, and ultimately the creation of a state in Palestine. To the Bolsheviks, this was a dangerous distraction from the socialist cause.
After 1917, the Soviet regime began systematically suppressing Zionist organizations. Hebrew schools were shut down, Zionist newspapers banned, and Jewish activists arrested. The Communist Party even created a special department — the Yevsektsiya — to stamp out Zionist and religious activity among Soviet Jews. Ironically, many early revolutionaries were Jewish — even Leon Trotsky. But they were internationalists who rejected Jewish nationalism outright.
In the late 1940s, Stalin briefly supported the creation of Israel — not out of sympathy for Zionism, but to undermine British influence in the Middle East. When Israel later aligned with the West, Stalin turned viciously against Zionism once more, launching purges and accusing Jews of being foreign agents.
So, while both Zionists and Bolsheviks emerged from the same world of Eastern European Jewish politics, they took radically different paths — one toward a Jewish state, the other toward a global revolution that had no room for national identity.
