as posted by the channelThe Ustaše was a radical ultranationalist and fascist movement that ruled the Axis-aligned Independent State of Croatia during much of World War II. Founded in 1929 by Ante Pavelić, the group sought to create an ethnically pure Croatian state after the breakup of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941, Germany and Italy established the Independent State of Croatia and installed Pavelić as its leader, or “Poglavnik.” The regime quickly implemented harsh fascist policies inspired by Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. The Ustaše government introduced racial laws and carried out violent persecution against groups it considered enemies, particularly Serbs, Jews, Roma, and political opponents. The Ustaše also faced strong resistance from Yugoslav partisan forces led by Josip Broz Tito. As Axis forces collapsed in 1945, the regime fell, and Pavelić fled abroad. Today, the Ustaše regime is widely remembered as one of the most violent fascist governments in wartime Europe.
