13:25Now PlayingConrad Helfrich played a key role in the fight against Japan during the early stages of the war in Asia between 1941 and 1942. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the rapid advance through Southeast Asia, Helfrich was placed in command of the Dutch naval forces in the Dutch East Indies. He was known for his aggressive approach and believed that the Japanese invasion could only be delayed by continuous attacks on enemy ships.
Under his command, Dutch submarines carried out intensive operations against Japanese transport and warships. These attacks yielded several successes and earned him the nickname “Ship-a-day Helfrich.” He wanted to inflict as much damage as possible on the Japanese, even as the Allied situation grew increasingly desperate.
Helfrich also collaborated with American, British, and Australian forces within the ABDACOM command. He advocated for a strong defense of the Dutch East Indies and supported offensive naval operations against the Japanese invasion fleet. This culminated in the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942. However, the battle ended in a heavy Allied defeat, after which Java and the rest of the Dutch East Indies fell into Japanese hands.
