Administrators say this contract — worth up to $285 million over a decade — is a major source of funding. Not to mention the civilian jobs that come along with the Applied Research Laboratory.
But the military has fostered mistrust in our islands that goes back generations. And after the Red Hill fuel spill in 2021, it’s got some asking: Should the university really enter into a partnership with the U.S. Navy?
