as posted by the channelThe storms are more frequent and the flooding is more severe: that seems to be the general consensus around South Maui, which saw nearly 20 inches of rain during last month’s storms.
And, of course, officials are preparing as another storm passes over the islands as we speak.
Meanwhile, the county is still repairing massive sinkholes from the last storm and stabilizing damaged infrastructure to prevent further destruction.
It could take months to repair the damage on South Kīhei Road alone.
While most of the residents who needed to evacuate during last month’s storms have returned home, and many of the neighborhood businesses have reopened, not everyone was so lucky.
One of two buildings at Kihei Kai Condominiums, already weakened by previous floods, collapsed sometime after 6 p.m. on March 13, said resident manager Michael Casey. The property was damaged beyond repair, and the owners recently announced that the building would be demolished.
