as posted by the channelA billion water jugs. A quarter of a million swimming pools. That’s how much water has been filtered by the U.S. Navy and dumped into a nearby stream since the 2021 water contamination crisis.
How did we get here? After the Navy’s Red Hill fuel facility contaminated drinking water in the Pearl Harbor area, the Navy started pumping water into the stream to keep any tainted water away from wells.
But the Navy never stopped, despite the state’s request that it use this water for some better purpose — perhaps watering the military’s 27-acre Walter J. Nagorski Golf Course. The 5 billion gallons already wasted would have been enough to water the course for 68.5 years.
