They came from Haiti, Venezuela and other countries where their lives were in potential danger. But have now been shooed away, possibly denying them a chance of a more stable future.
Just hours after Trump took the presidential oath the second time, the border was almost deserted on the US side. The Mexico side, however, told a different story.
Many of these migrants had been waiting for the appointments for months. Only 400 got through the San Diego crossing everyday and thousands waited. Now, there was no way to appeal, and no one to talk to. Migrants were seen breaking down in tears, many pulling small rolling suitcases crammed with clothing and stuffed animals to occupy their children.
President Trump had killed a CBP One App, a Biden-era initiative that allowed nearly 1 million migrants to enter the US stopped working. It is basically a lottery system that allots border appointments to asylum seekers.
