23:35:12Now PlayingAerial footage reveals the scale of destruction as a massive wildfire continues to burn through New Jersey’s Pine Barrens. The blaze, which has scorched over 20 square miles (52 square kilometers) across Lacey and Ocean townships, is now about 50% contained.
Evacuation orders were lifted and roads reopened in parts of New Jersey on Wednesday, according to local police, after the fire—first reported Tuesday evening—consumed at least 13,000 acres.
Heavy smoke is expected to persist from Wednesday night into Thursday, with shifting winds pushing plumes northward toward New York. As a result, an air quality alert has been issued for New York City, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley. Residents, particularly those in sensitive groups, are advised to limit outdoor activity due to potentially unhealthy air quality conditions.
