4:39Now PlayingUS President Donald Trump praised the Houthi bravado in the Oval Office. Trump was all praises for the Yemen-based, Iran-backed rebels, who were sworn enemies of the United States and Israel, just last week.
The praises come after the Trump administration cut a deal with the Houthis. The United States would stop bombing Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in exchange for a promise that the rebel group would not target US vessels in the Red Sea. But, what about Israel? Houthis reiterated that they would continue to pound Israel, as long as the IDF kept up its siege of Gaza.
So, what forced Trump to ditch a long-time ally? An ally considered critical for US interests in the middle-east? Houthis have a near choke hold on the Red Sea, one of the world’s most critical trade routes. It connects Asia and Europe through the Suez canal, and handles 12% of global trade.
When Israel launched a full-scale war in Gaza, after Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, Houthis committed to retaliatory strikes in solidarity with Palestinians caught in the crosshairs. In addition to a direct military offensive against Israel, Houthis began bombing and sinking commercial vessels liked to Israel and its allies.
