The veteran Liberal MP for Lac-Saint-Louis won the position following a secret ranked ballot after opposition candidates withdrew. Scarpaleggia succeeds Greg Fergus, who resigned amidst concerns about perceived partisanship. His election comes ahead of the historic opening of Parliament by King Charles III on May 27, 2025
