Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, declared himself "a Roman" as he completed the final ceremonial steps to assume his role as the Bishop of Rome. He formally took possession of the St. John Lateran Basilica, Rome's cathedral and the seat of the diocese, during an evening Mass attended by local clergy and faithful.
