Bolsonaro narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election to Lula da Silva, but he is charged with conspiring to stage a military intervention and annul the result. Bolsonaro was later handed an 8-year election ban for undermining confidence in the election. If he’s also found guilty of plotting a coup, Bolsonaro could face up to 40 years in prison.
