Demonstrators have gathered near the federal building in opposition to recent ICE operations, prompting a major federal response.
In a significant development, President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to deploy in Los Angeles. This move comes despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom, following two consecutive days of clashes between protestors and federal immigration officers in riot gear.
While addressing the press from New Jersey, Trump stated he is not currently invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807, which allows presidents to deploy military forces within the U.S. He added that while there is not a formal insurrection in Los Angeles, "you have violent people, and we’re not going to let them get away with it." He emphasized the need for "very strong law and order."
According to the California governor’s office, approximately 300 National Guardsmen are already stationed at three key locations across Los Angeles, with more expected to arrive. The deployment follows a presidential memorandum authorizing the Guard's use to suppress protest activity tied to immigration enforcement.
