The Madre Fire, ignited Wednesday in southeastern San Luis Obispo County, has rapidly expanded to over 52,000 acres (more than 82 square miles), making it California’s largest wildfire of 2025 as of July 4. Fueled by hot, dry weather and gusty winds reaching up to 64 kph (40 mph), the fire has forced evacuation orders near Highway 166 and closed parts of the route. Firefighters face tough conditions battling the blaze in temperatures around 35°C (95°F) with only about 5-10% containment so far.
