Heavy rain pounded Japan’s Kyushu island on Friday, unleashing floods, landslides, and massive evacuations. Authorities urged over 360,000 residents in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures to leave their homes as rivers burst banks and transport systems collapsed. In Aira city, a mudslide buried two people—later rescued—while a woman remains missing. Kirishima recorded over 500mm of rain, submerging streets and buildings. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest-level alert, warning of more torrential rain and urging immediate precautions. Flights, trains, and buses were severely disrupted as the disaster threat grew.
