5:19Now PlayingSyrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has reached out to Russia’s Putin to counter Israeli attacks in the southern part of the country. Damascus wants Moscow's troops to resume patrolling the border with Israel, as the interim government has run out of options to push back the Israeli troops’ aggression.
Remember, President Vladimir Putin is a staunch ally of the ousted Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad.
During the Assad regime, Putin provided full military and logistical support to the then-government’s forces to defend the country’s sovereignty. Russia had entered Syria in 2015 to support the Assad government in containing the civil war. Later, Russia, joined by Iran, played a major role in helping Assad remain in power. They were also instrumental in fighting against ISIS and Al-Shaara-led HTS rebels, who are now ruling the country. At that time, Putin’s troops had manned all of the Assad-controlled region in Syria. The Russian president also established at least 12 military outposts in the Golan Heights, near the border with Israel.
