6:07Now PlayingHamas fighters launched their biggest attack on an Israeli Defence Forces outpost in Gaza’s Khan Younis. Reports suggest that 18 Hamas fighters emerged from a tunnel near the IDF outpost and attacked both the post and multiple Israeli Merkava IV tanks. The fighters reportedly used the Yassin-105 anti-armour missiles and improvised explosive devices for the attack. Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for the attack. It said that Hamas fighters killed multiple IDF soldiers in a complex ambush. As per the Hamas statement, their fighters first targeted the commander of the Merkava tank, leaving the Israeli soldier critically injured. The fighters then entered a building in which Israeli soldiers were stationed, triggering a close encounter. Hamas claimed that its fighters shot many IDF soldiers at point-blank range, while also acknowledging heavy losses in the attack. As the IDF’s rescue operations team reached the spot to evacuate the injured Israeli soldiers, one of the Hamas fighters hiding in the tunnel blew himself up. Hamas then launched mortar shelling as a cover to help its fighters escape.
While Hamas claimed multiple casualties among IDF ranks, Israeli military officials denied any deaths, saying that only three of its soldiers were wounded. The Israeli forces claimed that they killed 10 Hamas fighters, and admitted that eight Hamas fighters managed to slip back into the tunnel. Israeli officials believe that Hamas launched the attack to take IDF soldiers as hostages. The IDF also acknowledged the successful infiltration of Hamas fighters that led to an exchange of fire with the Kfir Brigade. Israeli officials said the August 20 attack was a rare case of the biggest Hamas fighters’ assault on an IDF post in the Strip.
