Many experts suggest that Iran might have conducted a large-scale ballistic missile test and air defence exercise. Iran issued a Notice to Airmen on early Friday, closing off 640,000 to 800,000 square kilometers of its western airspace. All airlines were instructed to reroute.
The closure of the western airspace comes amid ongoing naval drills to project strength post the 12-day war with Israel. The Iranian Navy launched a two-day major naval missile exercise, codenamed Sustainable Power 1404, across the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman. This marks the first military drill since the war with Israel. During the drills, the Iranian Navy fired Qadir and Nasir cruise missiles, as well as the Qader medium-range anti-ship cruise missile. Iran claimed that the ‘Bavar 5’ strike drone, which can be launched from floating platforms and vessels, successfully destroyed its designated mock-up target. Open Source Intelligence Networks reported that US-led NATO and Israeli refuelling jets were flying over Jordan and Syria during Iran’s military drills.
