as posted by the channelThe United Nations’ Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, were attacked by the Israeli Defence Forces. The attack took place on Wednesday, September 3. UNIFIL said that the IDF dropped four grenades near peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. One grenade fell 20 metres from UN personnel and vehicles, while three other grenades were dropped 100 metres away.
The peacekeeping force described it as the first major attack on UNIFIL personnel since Hezbollah and Israel reached a ceasefire agreement in November 2024. Israel has repeatedly been accused of ceasefire violations, with near-daily strikes in Lebanon. Israel claims that it is targeting Hezbollah sites and fighters, but civilians continue to be caught in the crossfire. The IDF attacked UNIFIL personnel while they were clearing roads in the border area. The peacekeeping body said it had informed Israel about its road clearance work in advance. Though the Israeli military claims that the attack wasn’t intentional, UNIFIL expressed its concerns and blamed Israel for violating international rules. Notably, Israel and the US have been trying to wind down the UNIFIL presence in Lebanon.
