A major political storm has erupted in the Philippines as Senator Imee Marcos, sister of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., vowed to block Justice Secretary Boying Remulla’s application for Ombudsman. The powerful post was vacated after Ombudsman Samuel Martires—appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte—retired in July 2025. Acting Ombudsman Mariflor Punzalan-Castillo has since stepped in, but the fight for the permanent role is intensifying. Imee Marcos’s stance is seen as a direct move to protect the Duterte family’s interests against investigations. Boying Remulla, a Marcos cabinet holdover, insists he has “a lot to offer,” but his appointment could deepen rifts between the Marcoses and Dutertes.
