3:52Now PlayingThe Palestinian Authorities arrested Samir Khalila on September 10. Khalila, a well-known Palestinian businessman, had recently declared his candidacy to serve as Gaza’s transitional governor after the war. Local newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that Khalila was arrested by the Palestinian Preventive Security Forces from a restaurant in al-Tira in Ramallah. However, neither the Palestinian security services nor the official have provided any reasons of his arrest.
Khalila was arrested after announcing his nomination for ‘Gaza governor’, claiming support from the US, the Arab nations and Palestinian Authority. But his remarks triggered a huge controversy as the Palestinian
Authority termed Khalila’s statement ‘baseless’. On 12th of August, in an interview, Khalila confirmed that he was offered the position of a civilian governor in the post-war Gaza. He claimed that a ‘Canadian contractor’ working for the Pentagon had contacted him in July 2024 about the governor role. Khalila said he was told that the US was seeking someone to act as a ‘connect point’ between Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and key regional players, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Jordan. The discussion between Khalila and the purported Canadian contractor was related to the post-war phase in Gaza. This included reconstructing the Strip, public order, security and laying groundwork for a Palestinian state. Khalila revealed that the proposal was offered not just to him, but others as well.
According to Khalila, he immediately informed the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas about the proposal. Khalila claimed that he held multiple discussions with Abbas over the governor role offered to him. But soon after Khalila’s announcement, the Palestinian Authorities in a statement accused him of ‘shameful behaviour’. The statement said that Khalila was undermining the official stance of Palestinian Authorities, which opposes separating the Gaza Strip and from West Bank.
