CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A federal judge has issued a temporary injunction restricting federal agents from using riot control weapons against peaceful protesters and journalists outside a Chicago-area ICE facility. The preliminary order, signed by U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, bans the use of pepper balls, rubber bullets, and physical force such as shoving or tackling when dealing with individuals not posing a serious threat to law enforcement.
Ellis’ ruling also requires agents across northern Illinois to wear visible identification badges, addressing growing outrage over viral footage of masked, plainclothes officers carrying out immigration enforcement actions in U.S. cities. Civil rights groups hailed the decision as a “landmark victory for press freedom and peaceful protest,” while ICE and DHS have not yet publicly responded to the court’s ruling.
