10:00:06Now PlayingWASHINGTON, D.C. — October 22, 2025: As the U.S. government shutdown enters its 22nd day — now the second longest in American history — House Speaker Mike Johnson launched a blistering attack on Democrats during a fiery Capitol Hill press conference. Johnson mocked Democratic lawmakers’ TikTok videos, accusing them of “acting like influencers, not legislators.”
He derided the Democratic caucus for engaging in “publicity stunts” on social media, citing figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while millions of federal employees remain unpaid. “It’s hard to govern from a self-shot video,” Johnson quipped, defending the Republican position.
Johnson said the GOP remains united behind President Trump’s call to “hold the line” and blasted what he described as “crazy left-wing policies” — including Medicare expansions, higher ACA subsidies, and new welfare reforms proposed by Democrats — as the reason for the budget deadlock.
The Speaker defended the White House strategy to wait out the opposition, saying, “We’re not negotiating under hostage conditions.” Democrats, meanwhile, accused Republicans of “economic sabotage” for refusing to pass a funding bill to reopen the government.
Johnson’s remarks came just hours after President Trump renewed his ultimatum to congressional Democrats from the White House, urging them to “let America open,” as federal agencies brace for widespread service disruptions heading into the weekend.
The prolonged shutdown continues to strain travel, health, and veterans’ services, with economists warning of mounting financial losses each day.
