5:49:36Now PlayingA powerful winter storm sweeping across much of the United States has prompted emergency declarations in at least 20 states and Washington, D.C. as dangerous snow, sleet, ice, and frigid temperatures impact large swaths of the country. States including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia have issued weather emergencies as officials warn of blizzard conditions and hazardous travel. Washington, D.C. has also declared a state of emergency. The storm has left hundreds of thousands without power with about 217,000 customers reported without electricity in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Tennessee as of early Sunday, and some trackers showing totals climbing toward nearly 300,000 outages nationwide as crews work to restore service. Heavy travel disruptions have accompanied the extreme weather, with thousands of flights canceled or delayed.
