Responding to the claim, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said "We, as well as all specialists in global energy affairs, know that Russia is not the only country that supplies oil and petroleum products to India. India has always purchased these products from other countries. So, we don't see anything new here."
According to global trade data provider Kpler, India continues to import around 1.5 million barrels of Russian crude per day, even after Trump imposed 25 percent punitive tariffs on Indian goods. India is currently the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, accounting for over one-third of its total crude import
Responding to remarks by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that India has agreed to shift away from Russian crude towards American and Venezuelan supplies following a new India-US trade deal, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed New Delhi's priorities in energy sector.
With the India-US trade deal, a joint statement on which is coming in the next four-five days, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Washington will be lowering the tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%. Earlier, a day after the US lowered tariffs on India, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt repeated the claim that India has agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil and shift its crude imports to the DC following direct talks between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to reporters outside the White House this week, Leavitt said New Delhi had committed to ending Russian oil imports and increasing purchases from the US.
Diversifying India’s crude oil imports makes strategic sense — at least in theory. A broader supplier base strengthens energy security and reduces exposure to geopolitical shocks. Over the past two years, India has expanded its crude suppliers from around 27 countries to more than 40. New sources now include the United States, Brazil, Guyana, and several West African nations, reducing reliance on a small group of exporters.
