4:37Now PlayingCanada News: A deadly shooting has rocked Canada’s British Columbia province. Ten people, including the shooter, were killed and at least 25 others injured after gunfire erupted at a school on Feb 10, according to police.
Six victims were found dead at the school, one died while being transported to hospital, and two others were discovered dead at a nearby residence. Two people were airlifted with serious or life-threatening injuries. The attack occurred around 1:20 p.m. at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place alert at 2 p.m., urging residents to lock doors and stay indoors. The order was lifted nearly five hours later as the investigation continued.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed the suspect — earlier described as a woman wearing a dress with brown hair — was found dead inside the school, believed to have died from a self-inflicted injury. RCMP's North District chief superintendent Ken Floyd said this about the incident. He said "On February 10th, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Tumbler Ridge RCMP received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. A police-initiated public alert was issued as officers responded. The alert was canceled at around 5:30 p.m. once police determined there was no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public. As part of the initial response, officers entered the school to locate the source of the threat. During their search, police located multiple victims. The individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury. Six additional people, not including the suspect, were found deceased inside the school. Two victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, and a third victim died being transported."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement on social media that he was devastated by the shooting in Tumbler Ridge. Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, told reporters at the legislature that an 'excess' of resources, including RCMP and ambulance support, have been sent to the community. British Columbia Premier David Eby assured every possible government support to the community. He said "Here's the latest information that we have. I understand that there are ten people in total who are dead. Two different sites. Eight of the people who died as a result of the shootings were at the school, including, an individual we understand is the suspected shooter, who is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There are about 25 people who have been triaged by health authorities with various physical injuries, some, profoundly serious, and some more minor injuries.”
