9:10Now PlayingUS News: US President Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union address of his second term amid visible protests from Democratic lawmakers inside the House chamber.
As Trump walked down the aisle, US Representative Al Green attempted to wave a sign reading “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” but was blocked by Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
The protest followed backlash over a video briefly posted on Trump’s social media account depicting former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes. The White House later removed the video, with Trump saying a staffer had posted it.
Other Democrats also signalled dissent, with Representative Jill Tokuda wearing a white blazer emblazoned with the words “Affordability,” “Democracy,” and “Justice.” In his speech, Trump declared, “the state of our union is strong” and said, “we are winning, too much that people can't take it anymore.”
