11:10Now PlayingWorld News: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a strong message on Europe’s growing global role, stressing that the European Union is becoming more resilient, sovereign and powerful in defending its interests. Speaking about geopolitical tensions, von der Leyen said the EU has learned to use its economic strength, market power and global trading reach to protect its strategic interests.
“We have become more adept at using our strength in the pursuit of our interests — our market, our trading reach and our economic security levers,” she said. Von der Leyen also noted that the EU has stood up forcefully when its member states were challenged, citing Denmark and the issue surrounding Greenland as an example.
She emphasized that Europe is also investing heavily in democratic resilience to counter foreign information manipulation and protect democratic institutions. According to von der Leyen, the EU has launched what she called a “generational project” of European independence — aimed at strengthening the bloc across key sectors.
