8:00Now PlayingWorld News: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz slammed the US for having 'no common plan' to end the Iran war, at a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday. "The United States and Israel have been at war with Iran for over a week. We share many of these goals. But with the day of war, more questions arise. We are particularly concerned that there is apparently no common plan on how this war can be swiftly brought to a convincing end," he said.
"Germany and Europe, we have no interest in an endless war. We have no interest in a dissolution of territorial integrity, the statehood or the economic viability of Iran. A scenario as we witnessed in Libya, Iraq, or other countries in the region would also harm us all. This concerns our security, our energy supply and possibly also the developments around migration," Merz continued.
The German leader also criticized the E1 (East 1) settlement project in the West Bank as conflict-enhancing and delaying a peaceful resolution in the region. "The federal government urgently calls for refraining from such steps regarding the so-called E1 area. That would be a big mistake. The German Foreign Minister is travelling to Israel at my request to emphasize this as well," he said.
He also refused to consider loosening the sanctions against Russia to lower the skyrocketing prices at German gas stations, claiming that he remains hopeful that the war will end quickly.
