12:53Now PlayingUS News: Top Democrats Chris Murphy and Greg Casar have launched a blistering attack on the Trump family and administration, accusing them of benefiting from what they describe as “corrupt prediction markets” tied to sensitive government decisions amid the Iran War.
Lawmakers argue the system is ripe for abuse, warning that insiders with access to government decisions could exploit these markets for massive financial gain — especially during high-stakes events like the Iran war and operations in Venezuela.
“These are fundamentally corrupt markets,” Senator Chris Murphy said, alleging they are “rife with insider trading” and create dangerous incentives for officials to influence decisions for profit.
The proposed BETS OFF Act (Banning Event Trading on Sensitive Operations and Federal Functions) would ban betting on government actions where outcomes could be known in advance or controlled by a single actor. It would also prohibit speculation on wars, terror attacks, and assassinations.
Representative Greg Casar called prediction markets a “dangerous new venue for government corruption,” warning: “We shouldn’t live in a country where decisions about war and peace… could be driven by the fact that someone has hundreds of thousands of dollars riding on that decision.”
As scrutiny intensifies, the debate raises serious questions about ethics, transparency, and the potential monetization of global crises.
