Sanders and AOC unveiled the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center Moratorium Act, a bold new bill aimed at pausing the rapid development of AI until strict national safeguards are in place. “AI and robotics are creating the most sweeping technological revolution in human history,” Sanders said, warning that Congress is far behind in understanding its consequences. He added, “We cannot allow billionaire Big Tech oligarchs to reshape our economy, democracy, and the future of humanity without oversight.”
Ocasio-Cortez echoed the concerns, highlighting real-world harms already unfolding. “We have seen AI used for surveillance, deepfake abuse, and rising energy costs in communities,” she said. “All of this is happening because there are no federal regulations. We must choose humanity over profit.”
The proposed legislation would:

- Protect jobs and economic benefits for workers—not just Big Tech elites
- Prevent rising electricity costs and environmental damage
- Ban exports of AI infrastructure to countries without safety protections
Lawmakers argue the bill is necessary to slow down a reckless global AI race that could cost millions of jobs and pose existential risks to humanity. Over 100 U.S. communities and multiple states are already pushing similar restrictions, signaling growing public concern.
Even top figures in the tech world have raised alarms. More than 1,000 experts—including Elon Musk—have previously called for a pause in AI development, warning of the risks if the technology advances unchecked.
