8:05Now PlayingUS News: A heated congressional hearing on Capitol Hill exposed deep divisions over U.S. policy in Latin America, as Democrats sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s actions following the fall of Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro and warned of dangerous consequences for the region—especially Cuba.
At the hearing titled “Latin America After the Fall of Maduro,” lawmakers debated Washington’s next steps, with Republicans praising Trump’s approach while Democrats raised alarm over its legality and motives.
Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) delivered one of the most scathing critiques, accusing the administration of prioritizing oil over democratic values. “We know why the president ordered U.S. service members into harm’s way—Venezuela’s oil, not democracy,” Castro argued, questioning the lack of congressional authorization for military action.
Democrats also warned that Cuba could be the next target. Castro cautioned that any similar move would be a “catastrophe” not only for Cubans but for the entire region and the United States. He stressed that decades of U.S. policy have failed to improve conditions on the island, saying, “65 years of maximum pressure has not improved the lives of ordinary Cubans. This policy has failed.”
Meanwhile, Republicans like Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar defended Trump’s strategy, arguing it achieved what previous administrations could not in confronting Maduro’s regime.
The hearing underscores growing tensions in Washington over foreign policy in Latin America, as fears rise about potential escalation, humanitarian crises, and the long-term impact of U.S. intervention. Watch the full debate as Democrats and Republicans clash over Trump’s Latin America strategy.
