9:17Now PlayingUS News: Senator Chris Murphy delivers a blistering critique of former President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, calling the strategy chaotic, inconsistent, and damaging to U.S. credibility on the global stage. Speaking on the Senate floor, Murphy argues that the administration’s approach to war and diplomacy has been marked by confusion, contradiction, and what he calls outright “diplomatic malpractice.”
Murphy points out that despite this being one of the most significant military escalations in decades, there has been no formal debate, hearing, or vote in Congress authorizing the war, raising serious constitutional concerns. He warns against “normalizing” what he describes as gross incompetence in managing a high-stakes international conflict.
Highlighting a timeline of events, Murphy said Trump publicly made extreme threats—claiming Iran’s “entire civilization” could be destroyed—only to announce a ceasefire hours later, which quickly fell apart due to conflicting interpretations. He also noted repeated contradictions between Trump and his own negotiators, calling it unprecedented for a U.S. president to publicly undermine ongoing diplomatic talks.
Murphy criticized the administration’s erratic negotiation efforts, including rushed diplomatic missions, conflicting statements about sanctions relief, and confusion over who was even leading negotiations. He described the situation as “planned, executed chaos”, adding that the U.S. is becoming a “laughingstock in the world” due to the disarray.
He further warned that the consequences are not just reputational but economic and humanitarian—pointing to rising gas prices, threats to global supply chains, and risks of broader instability. Murphy argued that each passing day of the conflict deepens the crisis for American families and global security.
Calling for urgent action, Murphy urged lawmakers from both parties to step in and end the war, emphasizing that continuing down this path could lead to irreparable damage to U.S. credibility and national interests.
