10:48Now PlayingWorld News: Canada PM Mark Carney launched a sharp attack on U.S. President Donald Trump amid escalating tensions in the Canada–US tariff war, calling out Washington’s trade actions as clear “violations” of existing agreements.
Speaking during a press interaction, Carney pushed back against US pressure over trade barriers like dairy and alcohol, making it clear that Canada will not be dictated to. “There are a series of trade issues between the countries — most raised by the United States,” he said, while highlighting tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and forest products as inconsistent with the current deal.
Carney dismissed claims about an “entry fee” for negotiations, stating, “I don’t know where the talk of an ‘entry fee’ is from… it’s not language I’ve ever used.” He emphasized that Canada is ready for talks but on equal footing: “There are two parties in a negotiation. We’re not sitting here taking notes and taking instructions from the United States.”
In one of his most striking remarks, Carney declared a shift in the bilateral relationship: “This long period of deeper integration between Canada and the United States is over. Nostalgia isn’t a strategy. Hope isn’t a strategy.”
He also underlined Canada’s independent approach, saying, “We don’t get up in the morning and think about the United States — we think about Canadians,” while stressing that the country is prepared to negotiate but also willing to wait.
The remarks come as trade tensions rise, with the US threatening retaliatory measures and both sides locked in a standoff over tariffs and market access. Carney’s comments signal a tougher stance from Canada as it navigates a rapidly changing economic relationship with its largest trading partner.
