0:30Now PlayingIranian state television announced overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had instigated the "closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to insecurity in the region," following the latest US attacks.
"Due to the continued malfeasance of criminal America and in light of the aggressive army's attacks on certain southern areas in Hormozgan Province, the Strait of Hormuz is hereby declared closed as of this moment to the passage of any type of vessel, including tankers and commercial ships, due to insecurity in the region. Any passage will be struck," the announcer said.
The IRGC said in a statement that "the armed forces will respond firmly to any US aggression," announcing in subsequent statements that it had targeted what it described as 'key U.S. military targets' at Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al Jaber airbases in Kuwait, and at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, as part of two operational waves.
