0:25Now PlayingDuring a live GOP leadership press conference in Washington, D.C., a reporter interrupted House Speaker Mike Johnson to read the newly released Supreme Court opinion in Trump v. Barbara. The landmark 6–3 decision struck down President Donald Trump's controversial executive order that sought to deny automatic citizenship to children born on U.S. soil to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present.
Visibly taken aback, Johnson muttered "Oh dear" as the reporter read the 14th Amendment Citizenship Clause interpretation directly to him. While attempting to process the legal defeat on the spot, Johnson noted it could be viewed as a "textualist originalist view" but later formally expressed deep disappointment over the ruling. He claimed the provision faces gross abuse through "birth tourism" and warned that the decision presents serious challenges that Congress will now have to address legislatively.
