Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump stated the change was effective immediately, noting it was something he had "been thinking about for a long time." The controversial move follows the dramatic collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks last week, which has already resulted in massive cross-border tariffs.
The renaming has sparked immediate backlash. Both the Canadian Prime Minister and the Democratic Governor of New York—which borders the lake—swiftly rejected the order, declaring they will continue to use the 400-year-old name, Lake Ontario. International bodies are not bound by the US executive order.
