1:30Now PlayingCanadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defends Canada’s decision to walk away from trade talks with the United States, saying the terms being offered were not fair.
Carney says Canada wants a mutually beneficial trade agreement that respects its sovereignty, lowers costs and creates jobs. But he says the U.S. was demanding too much, including restrictions affecting Canada’s French language and culture, influence over future trade deals, and terms that could undermine key Canadian industries such as autos, steel and forest products.
“We worked in good faith to reach a fair deal. But since a fair deal wasn't on the table, we made the right choice—to walk away from a bad one,” Carney said.
