11:43Now PlayingUS News: In a fiery press conference on April 28, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Patty Murray, and Sen. Brian Schatz blasted Republicans for blocking critical Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, accusing them of prioritizing politics over national security.
They demanded that House Speaker Mike Johnson immediately bring the bipartisan DHS funding bill to the floor—a bill that has already passed the Senate unanimously and has been sitting in the House for 33 days.
Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that he wanted to be crystal clear that the Department of Homeland Security remains unfunded because of House Republicans, stressing that all Speaker Johnson has to do is bring the bill to the floor and it would pass. He criticized the focus on what he called a “$400 million gold-plated ballroom,” arguing that Americans want safety, not wasteful spending, and urged Trump and Republicans to get their act together and pass DHS funding without further delay.
Patty Murray (D-WA) said that House Republicans could fund DHS immediately and should have done so weeks ago, pointing out that the Senate has already passed the bill unanimously—twice. She argued that if Republicans are looking for someone to blame, they should look in the mirror, adding that their delays are causing real harm and that Americans are paying the price.
Brian Schatz (D-HI) said the situation is not complicated and that simply passing the bipartisan bill would reopen DHS and resolve the issue. He accused Republicans of choosing to keep the department closed rather than relying on bipartisan support, emphasizing that the message is straightforward: pass the bill and reopen the department.
