US News: California Governor Gavin Newsom held a press briefing to present his revised budget on Thursday, where he delivered a sweeping defense of California’s economy while sharply attacking President Donald Trump’s policies on China, immigration, tariffs, research funding, and the Iran war.

Newsom repeatedly argued that California remains the dominant force in the American economy, declaring, “We simply have no peers. We are the tentpole of the American economy.” He highlighted California’s leadership in manufacturing, agriculture, venture capital, innovation, and Fortune 500 companies, saying the state “dominates in every critical category.”

The California governor also accused Trump of undermining America’s economic strengths through cuts to research and development programs. Newsom called the proposed reductions to the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation “an assault on the secret sauce that makes America great.” He added: “President Xi is celebrating Donald Trump’s budget,” arguing that China benefits when the United States weakens investments in science, innovation, and education.

Newsom further criticized Trump’s immigration policies, warning that cuts to legal immigration and H-1B visas are worsening labor shortages across industries ranging from healthcare to construction and agriculture. “H1B visas across the spectrum equals slower growth and yes, higher costs,” he said.

The governor also blasted Trump’s tariffs and trade agenda, calling California “the first state to litigate on those illegal tariffs.” He pointed to collapsing exports for wine, pistachios, and almonds, saying: “Talk about a wrecking ball. Not 3.2%, 32%.”

On foreign policy, Newsom condemned Trump’s Iran war, referring to it as “the war, not the excursion, the war in Iran.” He argued the conflict has worsened inflation and energy prices nationwide, claiming: “Donald Trump has increased the cost of gasoline by 52% since this war in Iran.” Newsom linked the war directly to economic instability, rising inflation, and weakening GDP growth.

He also attacked Trump’s broader economic leadership, saying the president “doesn’t particularly give a damn about the financial situation of the average American.” Newsom warned that Trump’s policies are driving up debt, healthcare costs, and economic uncertainty while threatening millions of Americans with healthcare and food assistance cuts.
