8:03Now PlayingWorld News: Cuba President Miguel Diaz-Canel led a massive show of defiance against the United States, spearheading a huge protest rally in Havana and firing back at Washington over its long-standing economic blockade.
Marking International Workers’ Day, Díaz-Canel marched alongside thousands toward the US embassy, rejecting what Cuban authorities call a tightening “genocidal” blockade on the Caribbean island. The mobilisation, held under the slogan “The Homeland is Defended,” was organised by the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba and drew widespread participation.
In a rare public appearance, former Cuban President Raúl Castro joined Díaz-Canel at the rally, his first since January 2026, signaling strong unity within Cuba’s leadership amid rising tensions with the US.
Footage from the march shows both leaders holding a commemorative plaque displaying signatures collected in support of the Cuban revolution. Demonstrators filled the streets of Havana, waving Cuban, Palestinian, and Venezuelan flags while chanting slogans like “Long live Cuba.”
The rally comes at a time of increased economic pressure on Cuba, with officials blaming the US trade blockade as the primary obstacle to development, alongside growing dependence on humanitarian aid.
International solidarity was also on display. Palestinian doctor Yassan Sahran declared, “The Cuban people will not be alone… we will continue fighting to achieve our objectives.”
Hundreds marched through key avenues of Havana toward the vicinity of the US diplomatic mission, turning the demonstration into a powerful political message directed at Washington and former US President Donald Trump’s policies.
