10:39Now PlayingWorld News: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a stark warning on Europe’s vulnerabilities while addressing leaders at the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan. Reflecting on the past four years, she stressed that one key lesson stands out: how exposed Europe has become due to overdependence in critical sectors.
“During these last years… if there’s anything we have learned, then this is how vulnerable we are if we have overdependencies,” von der Leyen said, pointing to energy, security and defence, and global supply chains as major areas of concern. Her remarks come at a time when geopolitical tensions, including divisions with the United States under Donald Trump’s leadership, are reshaping global alliances and priorities.
However, the EU chief pushed back against the idea that strengthening Europe’s independence means isolation. “European independence does not mean inward-looking. Not at all. It is the opposite. It is reaching out to like-minded partners,” she added, signaling Europe’s intent to deepen cooperation while reducing strategic risks.
The summit in Armenia also carried symbolic weight. European Council President Antonio Costa described it as “historic,” highlighting progress in regional diplomacy. “It is historic because today’s summit has been made possible by the agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said, adding that Armenia now stands “in the heart of Europe.”
The European Political Community — a platform bringing together around 50 countries including EU members, the UK, Ukraine, and Western Balkan nations — has become a key forum for addressing shared challenges since its creation in 2022, following the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Von der Leyen’s message underscores a broader shift in Europe’s strategy: reducing reliance on external powers while maintaining strong alliances. Her comments are widely seen as a pointed signal to Washington amid ongoing transatlantic tensions over security, trade, and global conflicts.
As Europe recalibrates its position on the world stage, the warning is clear — resilience, unity, and strategic independence will define the continent’s future.
