'Is This An Attempt To Smooth Things Over...': Reporter Presses Rubio On Trump–Pope Rift | US News

US News: During a press briefing on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced a pointed question from a reporter about his upcoming visit to the Vatican, amid growing attention on tensions between former President Donald Trump and the Pope.

The reporter directly asked whether Rubio’s trip was an attempt to “smooth things over” following recent rhetoric. In response, Rubio dismissed the suggestion, stating the visit had been planned in advance and was not tied to any political fallout.

Rubio emphasized that the Vatican trip is part of routine diplomatic engagement, highlighting shared concerns between the U.S. and the Holy See, including religious freedom, global humanitarian efforts, and support for vulnerable communities. He also pointed to ongoing cooperation, such as distributing humanitarian aid to Cuba through the Catholic Church.

Addressing broader remarks linked to the controversy, Rubio clarified that Trump’s comments were focused on the threat posed by Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, particularly to regions with large Christian and Catholic populations—not an attack on the Pope.

The exchange comes at a time of heightened global tensions, where diplomacy, religion, and geopolitics continue to intersect on the world stage.
