Aguilar pointed to earlier testimony estimating the war had already cost $25 billion, while noting outside reports suggested the conflict could be costing “a billion dollars a day.” Pentagon officials later updated the estimate to nearly $29 billion due to equipment replacement and operational costs.
The California Democrat also grilled Hegseth on the administration’s handling of the ceasefire and War Powers Act timeline, asking directly: “How do we know that the ceasefire is active or not active without any documentation?”
Aguilar further challenged the administration by asking whether repeated ceasefire announcements and military projects were being used “just to evade the War Powers Act.”
Hegseth defended the administration’s position, insisting, “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon one way or another,” while declaring the Department of War was “locked and loaded and ready” if military action becomes necessary.
The tense exchange comes amid growing scrutiny in Congress over the cost of the Iran conflict, U.S. military operations in the Middle East, munitions stockpiles, and President Trump’s Iran strategy.
