During the press briefing, Kallas strongly criticized Russia’s actions during the proposed ceasefire, saying, “We saw that this ceasefire that Putin wanted was only very cynical… they were actually attacking civilians in Ukraine.” She added that “Ukraine kept to the ceasefire,” while “Russia didn’t really stand up to this.”
Kallas also rejected Moscow’s suggestion regarding a possible EU negotiator, warning that allowing Russia to appoint someone on Europe’s behalf “would not be very wise.” Referring to former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, she said he had been a “high-level lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies” and claimed Putin wanted someone who would be “sitting on both sides of the table.”
The EU is also preparing new sanctions targeting individuals connected to the deportation of Ukrainian children. Kallas described the issue as extremely difficult, stating, “You can’t really exchange children to children,” while stressing that Europe would use international support to help bring the children back.
The Brussels meeting further focused on strengthening cooperation with Western Balkan countries against hybrid threats, supporting reforms tied to EU enlargement, discussing maritime security operations in the Middle East, and coordinating diplomatic efforts on Syria and Iran. Kallas emphasized that Europe must remain vigilant, warning that “our adversaries are not sleeping.”
